Flag Burnt At Student Union Meeting
Submitted by Peter McCaffrey on 6 May 2009 - 5:57pmACT on Campus spokesman Peter McCaffrey today urged the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association (VUWSA) to condemn the burning of the New Zealand flag on university property.
“The New Zealand flag was today burnt by a group of students, including a former student union president, who attended a VUWSA organised Student Representative Council meeting,” Mr McCaffrey said.
“The meeting was scheduled to discuss the recent outrage over VUWSA’s boycott of ANZAC day commemorations.”
“At the meeting, VUWSA President Jasmine Freemantle claimed that VUWSA was unable to recognise ANZAC day because there was no mandate from students to do so.”
“Given that students are forced to join students’ associations, no Victoria student has chosen to give VUWSA permission to speak on their behalf. Clearly the association’s actions do not represent student’s views.”
“ACT on Campus calls on the VUWSA executive to reveal its policy on flag burning on university property, or admit that, with no mandate from students, VUWSA is unable to set policy or take a position on any issue without misrepresenting students,” Mr McCaffrey said.
Ends.

...VUWSA did not condone the flagburning. It was performed by members of the Workers Party. What are you on about?

Putting aside the fact that the VUWSA president is a member of the Worker's Party and i'm sure she knew what was going on...
We'd still like to know what VUWSA's policy on flag burning (on university property of course) is.

Varsity students thrown out for NZ flag burning
5:14PM Thursday May 21, 2009
Victoria University has thrown out three students for staging an anti-war protest on campus.
Joel Cosgrove and Alastair Reith burnt a New Zealand flag while Ian Anderson filmed it. All have been dissenrolled, with the University saying it was serious misconduct.
The group say they were attempting to highlight New Zealand's involvement in wars of aggression from the Boer War, the World Wars, Vietnam and Afghanistan.
The students are rejecting the university's actions, saying they will continue to attend all their classes.
